Mom's View---Our Mountain Retreat, Show Low, AZ

Goodbye to Subway in Globe

The closer to Show Low the greater the forests

How did Show Low get its name? A poker game for 1000 acres...hint the main street is called Deuce of Clubs. You can find the answer on the town's website.

The crew at Show Low Pizza Hut took good care of us 3 out of 4 run nights, sorry about the error in the upload.

Our camping spot at Fool Hollow Lake. Another interesting name...all the locals thought Thomas Jefferson Adair was a fool for trying to farm the area.in 1885. The town of Adair was later flooded by the lake, but the name had stuck.

Wow! Wonderful showers!

All the signs in the Fool Hollow Recreation Area have this clever theme. The whole facility is top-notch (no pun intended)

Lake view coming into Fool Hollow. The opening in 1994 was possible because of a unique partnership including Arizona State Parks, US Forest Service, AZ Game and Fish, the City of Show Low, and corporate sponsors.

Thought the dead trees went with the first dark clouds of the trip...we actually had a 30 second shower--ok, I didn't really need the wipers!

On day off we visited the Show Low VA Clinic. This is Drew with William E. Robinson, who served in the Air Force in the 1940's occupation of Japan.

Fred R. Meeker, an Army Warrant Officer flew Hueys in Viet Nam and Korea

Patrick Lennon, a Viet Nam vet served in both Air Force and Marines. We enjoyed our visit with these men and were honored that they took time for meeting us.

Staff members at the VA clinic who helped us work out details of the visit and photos-- George Godknecht (Army, Viet Nam), Cheryl Williams (RN, Nurse Manager at Show Low VA Clinic), and Diane Shuster (Air Force, Viet Nam era)

Also spent several hours at the exceptional Show Low Public Library.

  1. Incredible photos, Judy! I think it's wonderful and emotionally moving that you two are able to meet a lot of current military and veterans on this amazing journey. You are doing a good thing!
